Traumatic Events

Trauma is defined as an event or occurrence that has caused an extreme emotional response in our bodies. Shock and denial are often common after a traumatic event has occurred. Reactions such as unpredictable behavior, flashbacks and difficulty maintaining relationships can happen long term after the event. Although these are all typical feelings to have, some people have a hard time moving on with their life after the event has happened. Getting help from a professional can help you learn ways to cope with these feelings.

Complex Trauma

Complex trauma is trauma that occurs repeatedly over a period of time and usually involves the same relationships and context. Some examples would include:

·       Child abuse or neglect

·       Domestic violence

·       Military deployments

·       Refugee and asylum seekers

·       Sexual exploitation and trafficking

·       Extreme medical trauma

·       Civil unrest

Unresolved Trauma

Unresolved trauma is trauma that we haven’t yet dealt with or healed from. Research shows that unresolved trauma can cause many other health problems such as physical, mental and social health problems. An example is from back pain. Back pain can actually be associated with stress and other psychological problems and once we address these issues we begin to heal and feel better.  The trauma endured doesn’t necessarily have to be a big life-changing event. It can include the small stuff as well. Some symptoms of unresolved trauma include:

·       Anxiety during normal situations

·       Feelings of shame and worthlessness

·       Ongoing and chronic depression

·       Avoiding, people, places or things that remind you of the situation

·       Addiction or eating disorders

·       Bad memories, flashbacks or dreams

·       Disassociation which means disconnecting from situations or events
